First Day
To kick off our English 6 course, I would like you to introduce yourselves in a fun, engaging way that goes beyond the usual “name, age, and hobbies” list. This assignment is designed to let me get to know you better and to give you a chance to express your personality, background, aspirations, and what you hope to gain from this course.
Assignment: “My Story in English - A Multidimensional Introduction”
Format: For this assignment, you will be creating a personal narrative or a creative non-fiction piece in three parts: a written introduction, a visual representation, and an oral presentation.
-
Written Component: Write a one-page introduction (approximately 500 words) showcasing your uniqueness and your relationship with the English language. This can be in the form of a personal narrative or creative non-fiction, using anecdotes, interesting facts, or specific moments that have shaped who you are. Discuss your cultural background, passions, achievements, challenges, or any experiences you’ve had with English - whether through books, movies, travel, or interesting encounters. Also, consider how English as a Lingua Franca (world language–a language that most people are familiar with and have a good understanding of) has impacted your life.
-
Visual Component: Create a visual representation that complements your written introduction. This could be a collage, a drawing, a digital design, or a photograph with annotated notes. The visual component should creatively reflect aspects of your written narrative and offer additional insights into your story.
-
Oral Component: Prepare a 3-minute oral presentation based on your written narrative. This is an opportunity to express the key points of your narrative in your own voice, adding a personal touch to your story.
Content: The content of your written, visual, and oral pieces should give us a glimpse into your world. Feel free to discuss your cultural background, interests, achievements, challenges, or your experiences with English.
Expectations: I expect you to approach this task creatively, letting your voice and style shine through. While proper use of grammar, spelling, and punctuation is important, don’t be overly concerned about making your work “perfect”. This is your first assignment, and I’m primarily interested in getting to know you and understanding your English proficiency level.
Please submit your written piece and visual component via our online platform by the end of this week. We will schedule oral presentations for our next class.
I look forward to discovering your unique stories through this multidimensional assignment.
