Addendum to Course Reader: Shift to Blended Learning Approach

Dear Students,

This addendum to our course reader is to inform you of a significant shift in the structure of our course, effective immediately. This change has been influenced by the widespread availability of advanced technologies, including Artificial Intelligence (AI), which have transformed the way we learn and interact with information.

The primary change is that a substantial portion of the reading materials, previously covered in class, will now be assigned for completion at home. This shift is designed to maximize our in-class time for interactive, productive assignments that hone your writing, speaking, and critical thinking skills.

Though a substantial amount of reading will now be done independently, please rest assured that you will not be navigating these readings alone. For each assignment, I will provide detailed reading guides. These guides will highlight key points, themes, and questions for you to consider as you engage with the texts. It’s a good practice to take notes of anything you find confusing, interesting, or significant as you read. I encourage you to bring these notes and any questions you may have to class, where I will be happy to discuss and clarify.

In addition to reading guides, I will incorporate the use of flipped learning videos. These videos are designed to facilitate content knowledge acquisition outside the classroom, so that our in-class time can be devoted to applying and extending this knowledge through interactive assignments. You can watch these videos at your own pace, pause and re-watch any sections you find difficult, and come to class prepared to engage in deeper discussions and practical activities.

I believe that this blended learning approach will not only enhance your understanding of the course material but also foster greater engagement and collaboration in our classroom. By shifting the focus of our class sessions to more active learning, we can take full advantage of our time together and create a more dynamic, interactive, and enriching learning experience.

I appreciate your flexibility and eagerness to embrace this new learning model. As always, I welcome your feedback and questions. Let’s make the most of this exciting evolution in our learning journey!
