Welcome to Unit 5 of English 6 - Effective Communication and Public Speaking in English. In this unit, we will focus on enhancing your communication skills, both in spoken and written forms. We’ll explore the art of public speaking, debating, and persuasive communication, aiming to improve your confidence and proficiency when communicating in English.

Our core texts for this unit include:

  • Write to Speak: How to go from blank page to speaking on stage by Mike Acker
  • Talk Like TED: The 9 Public-Speaking Secrets of the World’s Top Minds by Carmine Gallo
  • Confessions of a Public Speaker by Scott Berkun

Assignments:

  1. Written Assignment: Write a persuasive speech on a topic of your choice. This should be a topic you feel passionately about, and your speech should aim to convince your audience to see things from your perspective.

  2. Oral Presentation: Deliver your persuasive speech to the class. This is your chance to put the principles you’ve learned into practice, engage with your audience, and receive constructive feedback.

  3. Group Work: Organize a mock debate on a contemporary issue. This activity will not only enhance your argumentation skills but also foster understanding and respect for diverse perspectives.

  4. Pair Work: Engage in peer coaching sessions on speech delivery techniques. This will allow you to give and receive feedback in a constructive and supportive setting.
