Unit 1 Group Assignment: English as a Lingua Franca - Group Discussion

Assignment Description:

For this group assignment, you will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of having a global language. Each group will prepare a summary of their discussion to present to the class. The summary should be brief and concise, around 200 words, and can be presented verbally or written on a poster or slides.

Scaffolding:

Here is a suggested structure for your discussion:

  1. Introduction: Briefly introduce the concept of a global language.
  2. Advantages: Discuss the benefits of having a global language. Consider communication, business, culture, etc.
  3. Disadvantages: Discuss the potential downsides of a global language. Think about language diversity, cultural implications, etc.
  4. Conclusion: Share your group’s overall perspective. Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages or vice versa?

Overall Impact Creates a strong overall impact through the depth of discussion and quality of presentation. Creates a satisfactory overall impact, but the discussion and presentation may lack depth or originality. Does not create a strong impact due to lack of depth in discussion and presentation.
